Japan’s PM states nation calls for active role in stopping another world war
Ishiba told lawmakers that it is important to keep the memory of World War II alive to ensure peace, stating, “I believe it is important to release something so as to avoid the fading (of World War II memories) and to never go to war again.” While reports indicate he may not make a public statement on the anniversary day itself, he might do so later.
Previous Japanese prime ministers have released formal statements on major war anniversaries, such as the 50th, 60th, and 70th, which were closely examined by other countries—particularly China and South Korea, nations that experienced hardship during Japan’s wartime aggression.
Though Ishiba’s influence has diminished within his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the parliament following election losses, he has chosen not to issue a Cabinet-approved anniversary statement this year. Instead, he stressed the importance of Japan actively contributing to peace rather than just “simply expressing thoughts,” and said he will review past statements before preparing any new message.
For context, on the 50th anniversary in 1995, then-Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama expressed “deep remorse” and issued a “heartfelt apology” for the suffering caused by Japan during the war.
