Japan Renews Plea for Nuclear-Free World
According to a news agency, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba underscored Japan’s enduring pledge to worldwide nuclear abolition, noting that Japan remains the sole nation to endure atomic bombings in wartime.
"When I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, I renewed my resolve that these unbearable ordeals and memories should not be allowed to fade away and must be handed down through future generations," he expressed to those assembled at a remembrance event conducted at Hiroshima City's Peace Memorial Park.
"Eighty years have passed since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, turning this city into a scorched wasteland in an instant, and I respectfully offered my sincere condolences to the spirits of those who lost their lives," he later posted on X.
The commemoration commenced precisely at 8:15 a.m. local time (2315GMT Tuesday), the exact moment the United States unleashed the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945.
The explosion obliterated the city and claimed the lives of approximately 140,000 individuals by the end of that year.
In the years that ensued, thousands more endured ailments caused by radiation exposure.
Roughly 55,000 participants gathered for this year’s observance at the Peace Memorial Park.
Hiroshima’s Mayor, Matsui Kazumi, inserted an updated registry of the deceased into the park’s cenotaph, which now holds a total of 349,246 names.
