Japan Records 3.9 Percent Drop in May Welfare Applications

(MENAFN) Japan received 23,028 welfare applications in May, reflecting a 3.9% decline from the same month in the previous year, according to official figures released Wednesday.

Despite the year-on-year drop, this number represents the second-highest total for May in the last ten years, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported.

While the number of applications has now fallen for two consecutive months compared to the previous year, ministry officials emphasized that overall levels remain historically elevated.

In May, 19,922 households began receiving livelihood protection benefits—a 4.7% decrease from May 2024. Meanwhile, the total number of households on welfare dropped by 0.4% year-on-year to 1,645,756.

The ministry noted that although the figures show a modest decline, it remains critical to monitor future developments closely and ensure prompt assistance for those in need.
