Japan, NATO Commit to Boosting Strategic Ties
(MENAFN) Japan and NATO have pledged to build upon their partnership by expanding “concrete cooperation,” according to a statement from the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
At the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss ways to reinforce their bilateral relationship.
Both sides reaffirmed their shared view that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions is closely connected, agreeing to deepen practical collaboration to enhance Japan-NATO relations.
Iwaya pointed to recent visits, including Rutte’s trip to Tokyo in April and the recent visit by Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of the NATO Military Committee, as clear indicators of significant progress in their partnership.
In turn, Rutte emphasized the strategic importance of cooperation between Japan and NATO, as well as with NATO’s Indo-Pacific partners such as Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea, highlighting substantial advancements across multiple areas of their relationship.
