China Adds Twenty Japanese Firms to Export Control List

(MENAFN) China on Tuesday placed 20 Japanese companies on its export control list, citing worries about Japan’s military buildup and the need to protect national security, as well as to fulfill non-proliferation obligations, according to reports.

Among the entities included is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a major contractor in defense and shipbuilding.

The Ministry of Commerce announced that Chinese exporters are now prohibited from supplying dual-use items to the listed companies. It also stated that foreign organizations and individuals are barred from transferring or providing China-origin dual-use goods to these entities. Any ongoing export activities involving these items must stop immediately.

The measures officially took effect on Feb. 24, according to reports.

Tensions between China and Japan have risen since last November, when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi remarked that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally be considered a “survival-threatening situation,” potentially allowing Japan to exercise collective self-defense.

Her comments prompted strong criticism from China.
