Japan Addresses Military Officer’s Intrusion into Chinese Embassy

(MENAFN) Japan on Wednesday conveyed “regret” following an incident in which a military officer unlawfully entered the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo. Authorities described the situation as concerning, given the seriousness of the breach involving an individual expected to uphold the law.

"It is truly regrettable that an SDF officer, who should abide by the law, was arrested on suspicion of breaking into a building," Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated while addressing journalists, as reported by a news outlet. He further noted that extra police personnel have been assigned to secure the embassy grounds.

According to Tokyo police, the individual detained was 23-year-old second lieutenant Kodai Murata, who was apprehended on Tuesday for allegedly forcing entry into the Chinese diplomatic compound.

Meanwhile, China dismissed assertions that the Japanese officer had entered the premises to hold discussions with the ambassador. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian informed reporters that the suspect had carried an 18-centimeter knife and intimidated Chinese diplomatic staff “in the name of God,” while urging Japanese authorities to treat the matter with gravity and conduct a thorough inquiry.

Lin’s remarks came in response to a question raised by a news agency, which suggested that the Japan Self-Defense Forces member had gone to the embassy to speak with the ambassador and that this claim was "inconsistent with the Chinese side's statement."

In a separate development, Tokyo confirmed on Wednesday that one Japanese citizen previously detained in China has been granted bail, while another individual remains in Chinese custody.
