Provided by AGPThe launch took place during Balikatan Exercise 2026, where Japan’s Self-Defense Forces deployed a Type 88 surface-to-ship missile system from a site in Ilocos Norte. The missile successfully struck a decommissioned Philippine Navy vessel located offshore approximately 75 kilometers away, completing the simulated strike within minutes.
Officials said the exercise reflects Japan’s increased involvement in multinational drills in the region, shifting from a limited role in previous years to active operational participation alongside partner militaries.
Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said the operation demonstrated improved coordination and interoperability among allied forces. He added that such exercises help strengthen preparedness for both security challenges and emergency response scenarios.
He also rejected concerns about militarization, stating that the drills are conducted under civilian authority and are designed for defensive purposes and transparency.
The exercise coincided with a visit by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi to Manila, where he held meetings with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and senior defense officials.
The development drew criticism from China, whose foreign ministry spokesperson accused Japan of increasing military assertiveness and warned that such actions could heighten regional tensions, according to official statements reported by state media.
Chinese officials described the expansion of military exercises in the region as a factor contributing to instability, while Japan and its partners maintain that the drills are intended to enhance collective security and readiness.
