Japan Detects Fourth Swine Fever Outbreak of 2026

(MENAFN) Japan's agriculture ministry announced Tuesday that a fresh classical swine fever outbreak has been detected at a farm in the central prefecture of Shizuoka — the fourth confirmed case to emerge in the country this year.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said nearly 3,000 pigs at the affected facility in the city of Fujinomiya are set to be culled following confirmation of the infection.

The outbreak came to light after local authorities received notification Monday of piglet deaths at the farm, prompting an immediate on-site inspection. Laboratory testing subsequently confirmed classical swine fever as the cause.

The ministry outlined a comprehensive containment response: all pigs at the farm will be culled, incinerated, and buried. A dedicated epidemiological investigation team will be deployed to identify and trace the infection's origin, while biosecurity measures — including thorough disinfection protocols and reinforced barriers against wild animal intrusion — will be significantly tightened across the site.
