Japan's Fertility Rate Falls to Record Low
Addressing a House of Representatives Budget Committee session, Takaichi characterized the country's population decline as "a quiet emergency and a vital issue," according to The Mainichi newspaper — sobering language from a leader who has made reversing the trend a cornerstone of her administration.
"I have only been in office for seven months, and I have not yet been able to dramatically change the trend," she said, acknowledging the scale of the challenge ahead.
The numbers paint a dire picture. Japan recorded just 671,236 births in 2025 — the lowest annual tally since records began in 1899 — while the country's total fertility rate collapsed to a historic low of 1.14, far below the 2.1 replacement level needed to maintain a stable population. The nation's overall headcount stood at just over 123 million in 2025, having shed 3.1 million residents over the preceding five years, according to data cited by Nippon.com.
To arrest the decline, Takaichi outlined a two-pronged strategy: boosting take-home pay for young workers to lower the financial barriers to marriage and parenthood, while significantly expanding state support for families navigating the mounting pressures of child-rearing.
The announcements come as Tokyo faces growing pressure to translate political urgency into measurable results — before the demographic window narrows further.
